New Motor - 216 SLi

#1 Post by Paul_1978_yorks » Thu Mar 19, 2015 10:45 pm

Hi all,

You may have seen on other threads this week that after being R8-less since 2011, I've finally got my hands on another.

My previous R8s have been three 214 SEi's. This one is a 216 SLi.

I live in West Yorkshire and collected it from all the way down in Clacton-on-Sea today. I got the train down and drove it back and I have to say it performed faultlessly.

Mileage on pickup was 63,085, and it has only covered 20,000 miles in the last 4 years.

There are a couple of faults which I will resolve:
[*]Central locking does not work on 1 rear door (I've fixed this before on one of my SEi's)
[*]Aerial does not go down fully (I had this on one of my SEi's I think - I'll try a drop of oil and WD40 to begin with).
[*]Boot is hard to shut (might need a new latch).
[*]Driver's seat moves backwards and forwards but does not go up and down

If anyone has any suggestions on resolving these I'd be glad to hear.

Bodywork wise there are a few minor rust spots, but it's to be expected for 20 years old (registered Feb 1995).

Improvements to do to improve the look of the car are:
[*]Fit a set of SEi alloy wheels
[*]Paint the spoiler - it looks like a genuine Rover one but it's unpainted black and needs to be silver.
[*]Fit SEi or other (leather) seats.

There is not much documentation with it, but the service book is stamped up to 41,000. There is however a part-exchange invoice where a lady bought it in 2000 and part exchanged her silver Rover 214 GSi, reg G162 PMX - this would have been a very early model I expect. It's now scrapped by the looks of the DVLA web-site (last on the road in 2003).

Anyway, here is a pic taken on the way home tonight (210 mile drive!)

Looking very tidy :clapping

Not a great surprise that it took the 210 mile journey in its stride.

If you do fit different alloys, keep those steelies, put good winter tyres on them and enjoy year-round motoring :cool

Just went to have a proper look at the car.

I only really had a quick once over when I bought it and was working yesterday.

Anyway, all fluid levels OK and clear. Boot is clean - by which I mean no rust stains which indicates no leaks.

Bodywork very good - just a couple of rust spots but nothing terminal by any means.

Busy weekend ahead so won't be able to do much this week.

More pics to follow in the next few days if anyone is interested?

Oh and it has no ABS!

A bit of good news whilst looking around the car today - found a sticker inside the n/s pillar saying Timing Belt Changed 9/11/12 55602 miles. That's good or I'd never have known as it's not documented anywhere else.

I've also unstuck the aerial with some 3-in-1 oil and WD40 - it's still a bit stuff though.

The drivers seat does go up and down despite what I said - mechanism was just a bit stiff.

So a little bit of progression - wash and polish next job next week. Pics will be posted.

On the look out for SEi interior and SEi alloys.

Quick job tonight - renewed the tired key remote by swapping the circuit board into a brand new remote casing…… little things!

Day off work Friday, so it will be getting a wash and polish.

As promised, some more pictures. Had the day off work today so gave it a good wash, cleaned inside the doors etc, and also gave the interior a good vac out. It's a lot better now and it was a chance for me to have a close look at it.

There are a few bubbles on the rear of the sills, but negligible really, and overall I'm impressed with it as a good solid car. I did intend to polish it, but had run out of Autoglym Polish and hadn't realised.

The car was new in 1995, but I don't think underneath the wheel arches had been cleaned….since 1995! I took off the rear arch protectors and cleaned them up, and cleaned out as much dirt as I could, ready for Waxoyling next week.

I'm picking up a rear door central locking regulator tomorrow, so that's a job for next week (light evenings!) Some of the interior door trim is not screwed on properly so I've got a feeling it's been off before! (Probably central locking or electric window issues I guess). Other than that everything is working, but the electric windows are a bit slow.

Been trying to find some SEi alloys, still on the look out. I did find some but the kerb damage was too much for me.

Rear spoiler is standard I think, but it's been painted matte black so I'll return it to silver at some point.

That has to be just about the dirtiest air filter element that I've ever seen :scared

Classic car's is a funny old game, yours looks to have been looked after paint and body wise and yet they haven't bothered with a air filter……..ever? due for change very 24k I remember? Are you changing the plugs too? I put up a post regarding ebay plugs awhile ago. £6.50 all in! :cool
